Alla fine del XVIII secolo l'Europa stava affrontando importanti cambiamenti costituzionali che coincisero con la crescente perdita di potere dell'Ordine dei Cavalieri di San Giovanni, ridotto al ruolo di semplice spettatore delle questioni politico-economiche del Mediterraneo. La rivolta della campagna cambiò radicalmente la situazione dell'isola di Malta.

Storia dal basso: questo, e non da ora ma dal tempo dello storico inglese Edward Thompson, sembra essere il percorso per trarsi fuori dall'histoire bataille, dalla semplice storia delle battaglie, fatta di condottieri e statisti, di sovrani e imperatori. Allora, proprio prendendo spunto dalla battaglia di Maida, tanti altri interrogativi si possono porre, che riguardano non l"'alto", ma il "basso", non solo i generali con le medaglie, ma anche i soldati semplici e, ancor di piu, quelli che non vestivano nessuna divisa ma che pure, pian piano. assumiamo abbiano fatto anche loro "la storia".

History from below: this, not since now but since the time of the English historian Edward Thompson, seems to be the way to draw out from "histoire-bataille", the simple history made up of battles, leaders, statesmen, kings and emperors.
Taking my cue from the Battle of Maida we can ask lots of other questions concerning not the "high" but the "low", not just generals and medals but also soldiers and even those who did not wear any uniform but we assume made history
as well.

Resorts, the millenarian past and its vestiges, the harbour functions, particular form of space organization and of human settlements can allow that cities, and above all harbour cities, can give the Mediterranean the unity which has been looked for. The analysis of urban phenomena constitutes a fundamental basis to understand political, economical, and social history.

Being a stranger in a city is not a new reality. Mediterranean cities developed a form of «cosmopolitism» founded on a maritime and commercial basis. Harbours, which, out of the need for a long-distance trade, received in a somewhat constant fashion, groups of foreign merchants whose authority got stronger to encourage and to arrange trade. Traditionally, harbour cities have housed cosmopolitan merchant communities; this kind of cosmopolitism has been brought to a halt by colonialism and wars, but Mediterranean harbour cities are always privileged places of exchange.

L'analisi delle aggregazioni spontanee del quotidiano rivela un comune denominatore: la solidarietà. La solidarietà è promotrice di relazioni privilegiate nell'ambito di una data comunità e definisce la natura delle relazioni con i suoi partners. In altre parole, la solidarietà concerne le relazioni all'interno di un gruppo e stabilisce i suoi rapporti con il "réseau" in cui traccia le frontiere delle sue aree d'alleanza.

Messina dues its peculiarities to the secular maritime and commercial tradition. The sixteenth-century cartography gave us the image of a city-port which was one of the most prestigious in the Mediterranean scenery, surrounded with embattled walls, protected in the west by the royal castles, the fortress of the Salvatore and by the Montorsoli (Michelangelo’s pupil) tower on the San Raineri isthmus, by the palace-castle in the Terranova area.

Maltese islands have always formed a port of call between Europe and North Africa, a strategic and cultural bastion between the Christian and Muslim worlds. The Maltese have been in touch with both for centuries, and the cultures of both have contributed many traits and many characteristics that the islanders have adapted to their own use.

Malta è stata da sempre, grazie soprattutto alla sua posizione geografica al centro del Mediterraneo, luogo d'incontro di stranieri. Dalle dominazioni subite fin dall'antichità - ricordiamo che conobbe le influenze romane,
bizantine, musulmane, e di nuovo cristiane dopo la riconquista siciliana dell'Xl secolo - fino all'arrivo dei cavalieri del Sovrano Ordine di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme è stato un continuo mescolamento di lingue, civiltà, modi di fare differenti.

C'est le cas de Minorque au XVIIIe siècle, mais également celui de Malte entre la fin du XVIIIe et le début du XUXe siècle : l'étude menée par Elina Gugliuzzo témoigne bien de l'épanouissement de l'ile dans une ouverture économique
désormais indissociable de sa situation stratégique définitivement acquise au coeur de la Méditerranée. L'ile-forteresse perdue par les chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem sert alors d'appui essentiel à la colonisation et d'escale de fret sur les routes commerciales de l'Empire anglais, tandis que son ouvertur large à la mer contribue à ciseler un "etre insulaire" original, à la fois oriental et occidental, conséquence d'une histoire frontalière faite de permanences culturelles et de superpositions d'influences extérieures.

L'obiettivo di questo studio è quello di investigare una particoiare tipologia di città portuali mediterranee: le città portuali che presentano un hinterland limitato. Durante l'età moderna alcune 'città-isole' giocarono un ruolo fondamentale nel mondo mediterraneo. Il mare Mediterraneo rappresentava
un 'medium of communication' e la ctttà portuale costituiva un vero e proprio fulcro nei densi networks di connessioni marittime attraverso cui le persone, le merci, Ie idee fluivano e confluivano.

The history of a city like Messina, born in the sea and living thanks its strategic position in the Mediterranean, cannot set aside the history of its arsenal. In reality an arsenal is a military structure of fundamental importance for every seafaring city, usually protected by walls and fortifications. An arsenal is a very complex structure with shipyards destined to build, to repair, to arm and to render 'working' the ships of a armed naval fleet.

Alla singolare querelle che vide coinvolti l'Impero usso e Malta, in un momento storico caratterizzato dalla crescenti rivalità tra gli Stati europei, è rivolto il contributo di Elina Gugliuzzo, che evidenzia la politica portata avanti dallo zar Alessandro I: una politica di protezione dell'Ordine di san Giovanni di Gerusalemme dopo la conquista francese. Essendo il doppio ruolo di zar di Russia e di Gran Maestro un ostacolo insormontabile per l'eventuale riconquista della sovranità da pane dei Cavalieri, egli mantenne, dopo la sua ascesa al trono, il protettorato sull'isola, proclamando la sua residenza imperiale temporanea capitale dell'Ordine.

A landmark in the history of the Maltese islands, the victory of 1565 represented a turning point in the struggle of Christendom against the Ottoman Empire. As early as October 1564, rumours circulated about an attack of the Ottomans on the island of Malta. The Grand Master of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Jean Parisot de La Valette, immediately ordered the return of all Knights to the Convent - the headquarters of the Order in Birgu - and appealed for assistance in preparing the immment siege.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance of the phenomenon represented by the most popular forms of social and religious association present in Malta during Modern Age. Confratemities brought about a programme of training of the individual conscience and of diffusion of messages of fraternity
and justice, fomenting feelings of 'democracy' and of rights defence. Most confratemities defended their ìndependence from the ecclesiastical and political power; the social engagement did not produce only spiritual elevation, but it deterrnined also a new awareness of human, social and political rights. In some confraternities the mernbers clearly showed their dissent towards the clergy allied with the Spanish power.

Among the devotional traditions that characterised religious and maritime festivals in Messina during the early modern period, the 'Vascelluzzo' festival has played a particular important role. The procession of the 'Vascelluzzo' (small vessel) follows the devotional course of the 'Corpus Domini', in which the religious element is superimposed on the popular element. There are different versions of the historical event that gave rise to the traditional festival of the 'Vascelluzzo'. In 1575, a small silver vessel was chiselled by Messinese silvesmiths, commissioned by the municipal Senate to thank the Virgin for her protection during terrible famines. A traditional procession, during which people followed the sacred vessel, was promoted by the Confraternity of Sailors, which was established in the church of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo.

The aim of this paper is to outline the major urban transformations that accompanied the Ottoman conquest and subsequent rule of Constantinople. The city of Constantinople, or rather Istanbul as it is called following the Ottoman conquest in 1453, became such an urban and military symbol. The conquest of Constantinople (Kostantiniyye)-Istanbul engendered Mehmed II’s lifelong ambition to revive the ruinous
city’s ancient status as the prosperous capital of a world empire.

Negli ultimi decenni, grazie ad una maggiore accessibilità alle fonti archivistiche ottomane presenti a Istanbul, Ankara, Il Cairo e Gerusalemme, la conoscenza della storia dell’Impero turco dal suo interno ha favorito un nuovo approccio storiografico, contribuendo a scardinare la tradizionale interpretazione dei rapporti tra il mondo orientale e il mondo occidentale. L’obiettivo di questo articolo di sintesi, che fa il punto sulle più recenti acquisizioni storiografiche sul Mediterraneo di età moderna, è offrire una discussione sulle reciproche influenze tra queste due aree geografiche,  attraverso l’analisi della dimensione economica, sociale, militare e religiosa.

Un libro sul Mediterraneo rappresenta certamente un progetto talmente ambizioso, e forse velleitario in questa fase della storiografia italiana, da rischiare fatalmente di deludere le aspettative del lettore. "Che cos'è il Mediterraneo? Mille cose al tempo stesso. Non un paesaggio, ma innumerevoli paesaggi. Non un mare ma una successione di mari".
